Phoenix roll past Chattanooga in season opener
GREEN BAY - The Green Bay women's basketball team defeated Chattanooga 60-30 in their regular season opener at the Kress Center Saturday afternoon.
"We came out of the shoot and we were really going, we had a lot of easy transition baskets," head coach Kevin Borseth said. "They were ready when they came out and against good teams you have to be. Chattanooga is a good team and I think we were ready today."
Former Notre Dame Academy standout Allie LeClaire led all scorers with 13 points. Kimberly alum Frankie Wurtz added nine points, as did Jen Wellnitz. The All-conference defender also added seven steals and eight assists.
"It felt really good, as coach said we played well in the trenches," LeClaire said. "It's nice to play against someone else, we beat up on each other in practice. I think it's nice to see everyone bringing their "A" game and playing really well."
The Phoenix defense, which was second in the NCAA in scoring last season, held the Mocs to 26.7% shooting from the field and just 30 points, which tied a program record for fewest scored in a game.
Green Bay returns to action Wednesday when they travel to the Kohl Center to take on Wisconsin. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
