Phoenix ready to make run at Horizon League Tournament
GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball team is ready to turn the page on the regular season and set their sights on a major run in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament.
"I am glad how we are playing right now, how we are practicing," senior guard Khalil Small said. "I am just excited to get to Detroit, really I wish we could leave tonight."
Despite a 12-19 regular season, 7-11 in conference play, the Phoenix swept Oakland and Detroit to finish the year and are confident as a No. 7 seed, they can make some noise in the Motor City.
"It is a one game at a time, four games in five days," head coach Linc Darner said. "If you want to win hopefully we can get the first one."
Behind Small and reigning conference player of the week Sandy Cohen, UWGB will hope to get hot at the right time, similar to what Darner's team was able to accomplish two seasons ago.
"I would say this is the best we have played, we played really well on the road, had a close game against UIC at home that we could have won," Cohen said. "We are really coming together at the right time."
Green Bay will meet Detroit for a third time this season Friday afternoon at 4: 30 p.m. to tip-off the tournament at Little Caesars Arena.
"It is win or go home, have to come out fight, scratch, claw, whatever it takes to get to the next round, I think we are ready to do that," Cohen said.
