Marian falls in hockey playoffs

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (WLUK) - Augsburg University scored two goals less than a minute apart in the first period, and held on for a 3-1 win against Marian University in the opening round of the NCAA Division 3 men's ice hockey playoffs.

Marian pulled to within one on a power play goal by Connor Blanck in the third period, but the Auggies added an empty net goal for the final score.

It was the first appearance in the tournament for the Sabres.

Augsburg, which picked up its first tournament win since 1998, advanced to face St. Norbert College on March 17 in a national quarterfinal game at the Cornerstone Community Center. SNC has defeated Augsburg in the NCAA playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

In other action Saturday:
Nichols defeated Fitchburg State, 3-1,
Colby defeated University of New England, 4-2, and
SUNY Geneseo beat Hobart, 4-2.

UW-Stevens Point at Adrian
Nichols at Salve Regina
Colby vs. SUNY Geneseo

The final four is March 23-24 at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.
