Green Knights hope experience helps in NCAA baseball tournament

ASHWAUBENON -- St. Norbert College baseball is getting ready for the NCAA Division-III Tournament, and in the early going, they should have experience on their side. They’ll play in the Midwest Regional, hosting at UW-Whitewater. In the Green Knights’ last appearance in the D-III Tournament, they also played in Whitewater, winning once and losing twice in the double-elimination format regional.

"We had a young team two years ago, now a lot of us are seniors,” said SNC senior first baseman Travis Mason. “We have a little experience going into this. We know what losing feels like there but we know what winning feels like there."

Two years ago, however, the Green Knights didn’t have to play against the host school; this time they will. St. Norbert faces Whitewater in the tournament opener for both teams on Wednesday at noon. The Warhawks are ranked 3rd in the country in the Top 25 rankings.

"The worst team can win, the best team can win. It just takes game by game,” said Green Knights senior outfielder Alex Larsen. “Take that approach and anything can happen."

The regional is double-elimination and also features Heidelberg, Concordia-Chicago, UW-La Crosse and Adrian.

The Green Knights feel like they’re riding some positive momentum. They went undefeated during the Midwest Conference Tournament to earn an automatic bid in the a D-III regional.

"We went through a little bad patch in the middle of the season; seem to have overcome that,” said St. Norbert head coach Tom Winske. “Hopefully we're really rolling right now."

The NCAA Division III World Series is held at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute May 23rd-27th.
