Area educators surprised with Golden Apple Awards

(WLUK) -- It was the longest standing ovation in Kewaunee, the longest line of high fives in Ashwaubenon and the loudest lunch time in Green Bay.

On Wednesday, the 2018 Golden Apple Awards recipients were announced with surprise classroom visits.

During a weekly assembly in Kewaunee, K-8 special education team Dave Chaudoir, Katie Krohn, Sandy Morton, Jason Rohr, Nick Rusboldt and Carrie Siebold, learned they were going to be honored at the annual event this year.

When asked what gives her enthusiasm as a teacher, Sandy Morton says, "Every day is different. Just seeing the successes that we have. Seeing how the kids come so far from that very first day of school."

At another stop Wednesday in Ashwaubenon, Valley View teacher and Golden Apple Award recipient, Michelle Loewenhagen, says, "I love coming to work every day. I love watching them learn and grow. By the end of the year, I don't want them to leave, but they're ready."

And it was lunch time when all sixth graders at Green Bay's Edison Middle School received a special cafeteria treat when their math teachers, Jared Barker, Debbie Joski, Eduardo Pineda, Holly Snyder, Andrea Huggett. received five Golden Apples.

"It can be a challenge. We each have our own ideas and what we think is best. but we hear everyone and try to make decisions together," Huggett said.

From math, to 2nd grade, to special education, a dozen more Golden Apple examples of paying it forward and preparing our next generation.


FOX 11's Tom Milbourn, Michelle Melby and Mike Murad kicked off the nomination period for the 25th annual Golden Apple Awards in September. Nominees were announced in January, and the Teachers of Distinction were named later in the month.

The full list of recipients was announced in February.

This year's Golden Apple Awards ceremony is set for April 18. It will be broadcast at 6 p.m. April 19 on CW 14 and at 6 p.m. April 22 on FOX 11.

The Golden Apple Awards are a program of the Greater Green Bay Chamber, with support from major sponsors.
