LA CROSSE (AP) - Organizers say a unique gathering this weekend in La Crosse is the American Idol of Elvis impersonators.Ronny Craig says the competitive event began 17 years ago and has grown to one of the country's largest gatherings of Elvis tribute artists.Thirty Elvis performers from the United States, Canada and England will compete during three rounds beginning Friday night at the La Crosse Center. A panel of six judges will make decisions based on vocals, charisma and costumes. The most talented Elvis will be selected from 10 finalists during the final round Sunday afternoon.Craig says 4,000 to 5,000 Elvis fans are expected. Proceeds benefit the Children's Miracle Network.Elvis' bodyguard and the best man at his wedding, Joe Esposito, will be on hand to sign his book about life with "the king of rock and roll."
