      Convict not fit for sentencing in heroin death

      LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - A La Crosse County judge has ruled a man convicted of reckless homicide in a heroin death isn't competent for sentencing.Attorneys for Malachi Hankel argued he suffers from schizophrenia and a bipolar disorder and his prescribed medication has altered his comprehension. Judge Todd Bjerke ruled Tuesday that Hankel is not yet fit for sentencing. The 28-year-old Hankel is being treated at Mendota Mental Health Institute. WXOW-TV says a review hearing is scheduled June 30.Hankel has been convicted of providing the heroin that killed Thomas Tremain last September. The reckless homicide charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years.
