CALEDONIA, Wis. - Sixty-five dogs, ten cats and one pig were recovered from an animal shelter in Caledonia.
A yearly inspection of the building found hazardous conditions to both humans and animals.
Officials executed a search warrant Thursday morning.
Ammonia levels were deemed unsafe for humans. The building is now being vented.
Police say the shelter might have tried to take care of too many animals.
"Some people think they're going to help these animals and it gets to a point where they get so overwhelmed, they can't take care of them, they can't control them anymore,” said Lt. Gary Larsen with the Caledonia Police Department.
The owner of the animal shelter was arrested.
