52 dogs and puppies seized from Pleasant Prairie home
PLEASANT PRAIRIE (WLUK) -- A Pleasant Prairie woman is facing charges after 52 dogs and puppies were seized from her home last week.
Darleen Chick, 66, is charged with 20 counts of intentionally providing improper animal shelter sanitation standards.
According to the criminal complaint, a citizen reported Chick had dogs that looked to be in poor condition.
On Nov. 9, officers went to Chick's house to check on her welfare, as well as the dogs.
WITI reports officers noted a strong smell of urine and feces when approaching the home. Another officer said, "every square inch of everything appeared to be covered in a film of fecal matter," the criminal complaint reads.
Officers say Chick did not provide the proper paperwork allowing her to have that many dogs in her home.
The dogs were seized and taken to Safe Harbor Humane Society.
According to the complaint, Chick told officers her husband passed away about seven years ago and she wasn't keeping up with the care of the dogs or the home.
City zoning officials have deemed the home uninhabitable.
