MADISON (AP) - A Democrat running for state treasurer is dropping out of the race, saying only that he has lost interest.

Dan Bohrod entered the fray to replace outgoing Republican Treasurer Kurt Schuller. The position has lost nearly every substantive power over the years and faces ongoing threats of elimination from the Legislature.

The Assembly passed an amendment that was the first step to getting rid of the constitutional office last session. But that bill failed in the Senate. Any successful amendment has to pass both houses two years in a row before heading to the voters.

Bohrod was running a campaign to restore power to the office.

Eight other candidates have said they are running and have to turn in nomination signatures by Monday.
