(WLUK) -- The state budget proposal that was passed by a committee Wednesday includes funding for a prosecutor in Marinette County.

Staffing in the district attorney's office has been in the spotlight since June, when District Attorney Allen Brey resigned. He told FOX 11 Investigates there was a backlog of more than 400 cases, a result of a lack of prosecutors and support staff in the office.

The budget proposal includes funding to make a current part-time special prosecutor position full-time for two years.

State Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, who co-chairs the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee, says he hopes newly appointed DA DeShea Morrow can work to reduce the backlog.

“The taxpayers of Marinette County deserve to have an effective and efficient DA and I am extremely confident that District Attorney Morrow will be able to do just that. Her first-hand knowledge of the situation will be invaluable as we begin to improve upon the current situation," Nygren said in a statement.

The budget still needs to be approved by the full Legislature and signed by Gov. Scott Walker.
