PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — CBS12 (WPEC) gained exclusive access to President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump and went inside Mar-a-Lago on Christmas Eve.

One of the first things President Trump did was wake up early to wish the troops overseas a Merry Christmas. This happened around 9:45 a.m.

During a video conference with five deployed units from each branch of the armed forces, Trump gave special congratulations to the Coast Guard in Guantanamo Bay. The president thanked the Coast Guard, saying they "saved thousands and thousands of lives" this hurricane season, especially in Florida during Hurricane Irma.

At 12:30 President Trump left Mar-a-Lago for Trump International for a round of golf with friends.

After returning from golf, the first family helped track Santa with NORAD at 4:30 p.m. Donald and Melania Trump surprised a number of children across the country with an unexpected phone call.

Trump spoke with a five-year-old who had just one wish for Christmas: for their grandmother to get out of the hospital.

"That's better than asking for some toy or something," Trump said. "That's much better."

Donald and Melania Trump plan to close out the night attending Christmas Eve services at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach.

The president is expected to stay in Mar-a-Lago until the new year.
