St. Lawrence Seminary honors firefighters
MOUNT CALVARY - St. Lawrence Seminary is now giving back after losing something very dear.
A school building was destroyed in a fire. Crews from 41 different agencies helped battle the blaze on March 8. No one was hurt and there was very little damage to other buildings.
The school hosted a dinner Thursday to honor and thank the firefighters who responded that day.
"Looked through the window and I could see flames rolling through," said Mount Calvary Fire Department Captain Jef Burg, who was one of the first firefighters at St. Lawrence Seminary the day of the fire.
Crews from dozens of departments fought the blaze for hours. In the end, the 140-year-old St. Joseph Hall was destroyed.
"If it wasn't for all the area departments more would have been lost," said Burg.
Thursday, Burg and more than 100 of his peers from that day met in a more relaxed environment. The school held a dinner in their honor.
"Just to see where everybody was and how it was set up is gonna be really interesting," said Burg.
School rector and president Father John Holly told FOX 11 this is just the school's way of saying "thank you."
"We're so grateful for their hard work that day. For the cooperation between different departments that was so evident to us and for just caring so much for us," Holly explained.
In turn, Burg told us he's grateful for the gesture.
"Shows very good appreciation to volunteer fire departments. None of us get paid for anything we do," said Burg.
Holly told us St. Lawrence Seminary is moving on from the fire. School leaders are working on plans for a new building to go in the place of St. Joseph Hall; in the meantime, they're making do.
"Able to relocate a lot of different classrooms and a lot of the different offices and stuff. So we're a little cramped and crowded right now, but we've been able to get through," Holly explained.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department has called the fire suspicious, but told FOX 11, at this point, there are no updates on the investigation. No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
