APPLETON – The city of Appleton is putting poetry on the street.

Writer Patricia Casten read one of her poems Wednesday as its words were etched into the sidewalk at City Park. It was the first one selected for the new sidewalk poetry program.

The idea came from St. Paul, Minnesota.

Appleton officials say you'll be able to see their program grow.

“What we'd like to do is add about five or six poems each year and we're going to create a map,” said Paula Vandehey, the city’s director of public works. “The idea is people can go out onto that map, maybe print out a neighborhood and then walk that neighborhood and find the poems that are located in that neighborhood."

Residents of Appleton and students in the school district can submit a poem. But it must be an original work.
