Prosecutors: Heroin ring suspect escaped hospital while in police custody
GREEN BAY - FOX 11 has new details in an alleged heroin ring.
Brown County prosecutors have called it the biggest heroin distribution conspiracy in the area.
So far, 18 people have been formally charged.
And word Wednesday the latest suspect to appear in court actually escaped from police custody while he was being treated at a local hospital.
Michael Hekenberger appeared by video conference today from the jail.
His court documents are sealed but in open court prosecutors said he was one of the main sources of supply for heroin in the area.
Hekenberger is being held on a $175 thousand cash bond because of the heroin and escape charges.
"Mr. Hekenberger escaped last weekend from Aurora Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment. He was in police custody on this felony conspiracy case. He had around the guard supervision and he ran out of the ICU, out of Aurora hospital and fled from police," said Assistant District Attorney Wendy Lemkuil.
Heckenberger is currently in jail. The prosecutor wouldn't say why he was in the hospital.
Again, all court documents have been sealed, so few details about the alleged, multi-tiered ring have been released.
