Preble announces start date for school year
GREEN BAY - Classes at Preble High School in Green Bay will start almost two weeks late.
A fire started in the school's gym last Friday. Late Friday afternoon, school district officials announced the new start date for classes will be Monday, September 15.
The original start date for classes was supposed to be the September 2. District officials said they are still finalizing plans to make up the lost time.
However, they said their plans will avoid using weekends and holidays to make-up time.
They also said there will be no changes to end of the school year dates. The last day of school remains June 10, 2015 (June 4 for seniors).
Teachers will have workdays on September 10 and 11 to prepare classrooms for students.
Registration will be held in the Preble Commons on Thursday, September 11 from 4 to 8 p.m., and on Friday, September 12, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
FOX 11 went to the school Friday to see the progress.
The district's superintendent Michelle Langenfeld was there, but refused to go on camera. Langenfeld has yet to talk publicly about the fire.
Investigators said it ignited overnight after district employees did not properly dispose of rags they were using to resurface the gym's floor.
Teachers were also at the school Friday afternoon to get a look inside their classrooms.
Workers have been making progress, and Friday night is the first night they will be in the school overnight.
The restoration company said workers will not have to worry about air quality inside the school.
"The air quality has been deemed to be acceptible, so we do not have any hazards in here as far as air quality is concerned," said J. Murphy, of Paul Davis Restoration Company.
