Plane pullers raise money for veterans
APPELTON (WLUK) -- Appleton International Airport hosted its first "Pulling for Honor" event Saturday.
Twenty-person teams pulled a nearly 200,000 pound FedEx plane 12 feet.
The event raised over $70,000 to help fund an "Old Glory Honor Flight."
The flight will transport 100 veterans of World War Two, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War to Washington, D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor.
"They're out here pulling a 200,000 pound airplane. Our vets pulled their weight back in the '40s, '50s and '60s, so it's our time to pull our weight now," said Drew MacDonald, Old Glory Honor Flight president.
Prizes were awarded to the top three fastest pulls, most funds raised, slowest pull and best team costume.
The event also featured a children's plane pull, aircraft displays and a cookout.
