ASHWAUBENON - More than three years after the Packers won Super Bowl XLV, plans may finally be moving forward to rename a street after head coach Mike McCarthy.Following in the street-naming footsteps of Lambeau, Lombardi, Starr and Holmgren, 'Mike McCarthy Way' may soon be part of the Village of Ashwaubenon. The latest plans involve a street that hasn't been part of the previous plans.Village leaders are proposing renaming part of Potts Ave. It would impact the section between S. Oneida St. and Ashland Ave."This area is in an area of transition, so there are some blank buildings and there are buildings that are going to change rapidly, so we thought this would be the best area," said village president Mike Aubinger.Aubinger says the only cost to taxpayers would be changing the street signs. He estimates that would take no more than a thousand dollars.Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt first suggested naming a street after McCarthy during a celebration after Super Bowl XLV.That spurred talks between Green Bay, Ashwaubenon and De Pere. However, a proposal to rename Ashland Avenue stalled last summer. There are other streets in the Green Bay area named after Packers leaders, from Lombardi and Holmgren to Starr, Isbell and Lambeau.Tuesday night, the Ashwaubenon Plan Commission briefly discussed the latest plans. One business owner expressed concerns about the cost of changing his address."Changing the websites, address change, notification," said Gary Van Enkenvort of Van's Fire and Safety. "We've got a customer base probably around 15,000-18,000. So there's expense here."Mike McNerney, the general manager of the Green Bay Distillery, believes his extra costs will quickly be recovered by an increase in business."The change of Potts closer to the stadium, I think it makes sense and it's a welcomed change for the businesses around here," said McNerney.A public hearing on the proposal will be held July 22. The village board could then take a vote and put Coach McCarthy's name on the map.The mayors of Green Bay and De Pere have told Aubinger they support the latest plans. There is about half a mile of Potts Ave. that extends east of Ashland to S. Broadway. That part of the road would still be named Potts Ave.
