ASHWAUBENON - Another hotel is in the works for the Green Bay area.
A site plan has been submitted for a Marriott Residence Inn on the corner of South Broadway and Marina Lane in Ashwaubenon.
With Packers training camp just days away, this is the busy time of year for hotels in the Green Bay area. A new Marriott Residence Inn is planned to provide another option.
“They are extended stay,” said Mike Aubinger, Ashwaubenon’s Village President. “They have kitchens in them and bathrooms, etc. They are more of a destination hotel. People look at it as a place to stay and they go there for that reason.”
The new hotel would have four floors with 100 suites. While the hotel is designed for extended stays, that doesn't mean it won't compete with more traditional hotels in the area.
“Everybody wants all the business they can get,” said Craig Bleier, the general manager of Springhill Suites in Ashwaubenon, which is also under the Marriott name. “All the major brands will have a long-term stay rate.”
Bleier says this year his hotel occupancy is over 70 percent. In recent months, he says that number climbed to more than 80 percent.
“People who are going to invest are going to look at a market and what the occupancy is for the market, not a certain hotel,” said Bleier.
According to the Greater Green Bay Area Convention and Visitor's Bureau, hotel occupancy overall for the area is 50.7 percent for the year. That's up 1.7 percent from last year.
Despite those numbers, Aubinger says he agrees with the proposed hotel's developers that there is a need.
“It's a very nice looking hotel, very nice layout for it. I think it's going to be a good addition to the community,” said Aubinger.
GB Hotel, LLC is the developer behind the proposed hotel.
