APPLETON - A motorcyclist was hospitalized after he struck a mattress that fell from a pick-up on Highway 441.

Police say it happened in the southbound lanes of the highway between the College Avenue and Calumet Street exits around 4:45 Saturday afternoon.

The motorcyclist crashed into the median after hitting the mattress.

Officials say his injuries aren't considered life-threatening.

The driver of the pick-up truck was cited for having an unsecured load.

The road was shut down for three hours.

And while police closed down the highway, they noticed the road had buckled.

Appleton police tell us it heaved up about eight inches, which required immediate repair.

Because the road was already shut down, police report no motorists were injured by the buckle.
