GREEN BAY - The U.S. Highway 41 project is moving forward, and that means more changes for drivers. The new ramps on 41 near Shawano Avenue in Green Bay will open soon. But Shawano Avenue and other streets around it will also be closing.People picking up plants and grabbing groceries off of Shawano Avenue Tuesday say they're not looking forward to the road closing at the end of June."I use that road every day to get to work. So it's going to suck," said Mary Jo Boutin of Howard."It's a big hassle to get around town so I have to move, I have to change my way of getting to work and getting home," said Lori Casey of Suamico. The Department of Transportation recommends Memorial Drive and Larson Road as alternate routes for local traffic. Those connecting from Highway 41 to 29 won't need a detour. While Shawano shuts down for sixty days, another way to get around or technically over, the closure will open up."The first thing we have to do is open the flyover ramps and in a day or even the same day we will be closing Shawano Avenue, where everyone today is driving at the bottom," said U.S. 41 Project Manager Eric Gwidt. This intersection here at Shawano Avenue is just one of two major intersections that are scheduled to close for two months."When we're done with the Shawano avenue intersection, we'll open it, and then we'll close the Packerland intersection so one cannot be closed at the same time as the other," said Gwidt.Gwidt showed the closure plans at this community meeting Tuesday evening.Drivers around town aren't thrilled to continually change their routes."Yeah, I don't know how I'm going to be getting home. It'll be taking a lot of different detours, I guess," said Casey. But with this construction zone heading into the last phase, they know their traffic headaches won't last forever."It'll be worth the pain I think once it's all taken care of," said Casey. The 41 and Shawano interchange will be finished by November. But, the entire U.S. 41 project won't be done until the end of 2016.
