MENASHA - The Menasha lock should be open for boaters to use on the July 4 holiday.

The lock has been closed since Friday, when a hinge failed. With the lock closed, boats are not able to travel between the Fox River and Lake Winnebago.

The Fox River Navigational System Authority, which owns and operates the lock system, says it has finished its inspection and arranged for the repairs to be made.

"The Authority also understands the inconvenience caused some folks by the unfortunate failure of the gate hinge last Friday and appreciates the public's patience," authority COO Robert Stark said in a news release. "As the system is being restored, plans are also being formulated to prevent incidents such as this through a program of regular inspections."

Stark says more than 20,000 passengers and an increasing number of kayakers boat on the Fox River every year.
