Local authorities receive calls on viral child porn video

Officials at the Brown County Sheriff's Office say they received several calls from people in the area, about a viral child porn video, February 2, 2018. (WLUK)

GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- A disturbing video, shared through Facebook, caused concern here in Northeast Wisconsin.

"We received multiple phone calls from citizens saying they received something in their Facebook Messenger inbox, in reference to a child porn video," explained Lt. James Valley of the Brown County Sheriff's Office.

The video showed a sex act, involving a child.

Police say 44-year-old Germaine Moore was arrested in Alabama as part of the investigation. He has been charged with sexual assault of a child, as well as distribution of a video.

Valley says if you see a video or message containing potential criminal behavior, you should report it, rather than sharing it, "I think that's what happened here, individuals were trying to help law enforcement; our recommendation is to call law enforcement."

He says criminals are often seeking attention, "Individuals are actually being gratified from this type of material. So, they want everyone to see it."

Experts say social media has created a platform where posts can go viral in minutes.

"The ability to connect with people globally continues to grow. It's in our pockets, you become very accessible to people," said Jenna Landers, social media specialist at UW-Green Bay.

Landers says it's important to examine a link before clicking, "Sometimes there's a preview of the video. So, it's something if you get a gut feeling that you shouldn't be clicking on it, don't."

As for law enforcement, they say reporting the crime will help resolve the situation quicker.

"Start our investigation right away, find the victim, and the perpetrator involved," Valley further explained.

Alabama officials say the victim in the video was found safe.
