Learning to avoid concussions by tackling safely
MENASHA - Conversations about preventing concussions on the football field are becoming more and more prevalent, especially when it comes to young athletes.
Friday some players and coaches in our area, took in a lesson on tackling, safely.
Connor Quick plays offense for Menasha High School's football team and he told FOX 11 the chance of being injured, is something he is aware of.
"You see people getting hurt all the time from a simple tackle that didn't look like it hurt that much, but can turn out very badly," Quick said.
Coach Thurmond Moore's goal is to prevent that, particularly when it comes to head injuries. Moore ran a Tackle Sure Clinic with the Wisconsin North Football Association in Menasha Friday. He's worked with NFL players for decades.
"If it's done right then your head shouldn't be involved," Moore explained.
The CDC estimates between two and four million concussions occur in the U.S. each year and football is the most common sport for the injury.
Moore told FOX 11 concussions can lead to long term brain damage.
"Ask moms. They're not letting their young men play the game," he said.
So Moore teaches players how to tackle safely, but effectively.
"The power part of your body, which is your hips, are involved and that's what we teach, teach how to get your body in control," Moore explained.
Moore led a clinic for coaches as well.
"This is only gonna help our program, help our kids and understand that, you know, we don't need to do some things in practice that maybe we've done in the past and maybe would have done in the future," said Jeremy Korth, Menasha High School football coach.
Moore also told us players, coaches and parents need to be willing to pull a player if there's any chance he has a concussion.
Quick said he'll pass what he's learned on to his team mates.
"Even if you're on offense you're gonna get the chance to tackle someone," he said.
There are two more clinics this weekend, both are Saturday.
One is at Green Bay's Preble High School in the morning. Coaches clinic is from 8:00-10:00am. Players clinic is from 10:00am to 1:00pm
The other is at Riverview Middle School in Kaukauna in the afternoon. Coaches clinic is from 2:00-4:00pm. Players clinic is from 2:00-7:00pm.
