Lawrence University Jazz Studies Director dies

APPLETON - Lawrence University Jazz Studies director, Fred Sturm, died Sunday, August 24th at his De Pere home following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Sturm, 63, graduated from Lawrence in 1973 and then returned to teach.

Sturm, an award winning composer, enjoyed a 37 year teaching career, including 26 years as director of jazz studies and improvisational music at Lawrence.

One of many honors Sturm earned during his career was a 1997 Grammy Award nominee. He was also awarded the 2003 ASCAP/IAJE Commission in Honor of Quincy Jones, a prize granted annually to one jazz composer of international prominence.

A public memorial celebrating Sturm’s life will be held at Lawrence on a date to be determined.
