Man charged in Brown County OWI chase and crash
GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- An 18-year-old Green Bay man has been charged in connection with a OWI chase and crash earlier this week.
Joseph Obert-Walton is charged with second-degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing an officer and causing injury while operating under the influence.
According to the criminal complaint, the incident began around 2 a.m. Tuesday when a sheriff's deputy noticed Obert-Walton's vehicle swerving on Lineville Road. After Obert-Walton's vehicle went through an intersection, the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop, the complaint reads.
Obert-Walton accelerated and merged onto I-41 and went over the Leo Frigo Bridge at speeds exceeding 150 mph, the complaint says.
The vehicle crashed when Obert-Walton lost control around a curve and crashed on I-43 in the area of Highway JJ in Bellevue, officials say.
Obert-Walton was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injures.
A passenger in the car, an 18-year-old woman from De Pere, was wearing her seat belt and was not injured.
When police interviewed the passenger, she told police despite her pleas for him to pull over, Obert-Walton refused because he was intoxicated, documents say.
The passenger estimated Obert-Walton had eight beers and numerous shots of liquor before getting behind the wheel, the criminal complaint says.
