GREEN BAY (WLUK) -- As more than 3,000 Donald Trump supporters filled the KI Convention Center Monday night.

Some of the chants in the crowd were directed at House Speaker, Paul Ryan, as people shouted “Paul Ryan sucks.”

Ryan has endorsed Trump, but for months, the relationship between the two has been tense.

“I think it was a lukewarm endorsement to begin with,” said UW-Green Bay political science professor Aaron Weinschenk.

During Monday's rally, Trump did not mention Ryan.

In the past, Trump has gone back and forth on wanting Ryan's support.

Weinschenk explained one of Ryan's concerns is if people don't vote for Trump, they won't vote for other Republicans down the ballot.

"Trump has been going down in the polls lately and so there is always the possibility that somebody at the top of the ticket that is unpopular pulls the rest of the people down with them,” said Weinschenk.

In a statement one of Ryan's aides said:

"Paul Ryan is a team player with a clear goal this Election Day, beating Democrats and winning. Ryan has sent $750,000 to the Republican Party of Wisconsin to fund voter outreach programs that will help elect Republicans up and down the ballot."

"He's got majorities to look out for in Congress and they don't want to lose control of the chambers,” explained Weinschenk.

Ryan is up for re-election in November, facing Democrat Ryan Solen.

In the latest Marquette Law School poll released earlier this month, Paul Ryan had a 47 percent favorable rating.
