BELLEVUE (WLUK) -- An area elementary school teacher was recognized Friday for her dedication to keeping students safe.

Tonie Mixer, a fourth grade teacher at McAuliffe Elementary, was named the 2016 - 2017 School Safety Patrol Advisor of the Year.

The award is given out annually by AAA.

Mixer helps recruit, train and supervise fourth and fifth grade students who serve as patrollers.

She along with the students help other kids get to and from school safely.

"I'm proud to say that during my seven-year tenure, there's been no traffic accidents and no students being hurt out and about on the crosswalks. I'm just very, very proud of the program here at McAuliffe," Mixer said.

The AAA School Safety Patrol tradition dates back to 1920 and includes over 600,000 patrollers in schools across the country.
