Raft race honors Fox Valley woman who died of cancer
NEW LONDON (WLUK) -- The Wolf River in New London filled with people as they honored a local woman who died of cancer.
The 6th Annual Wolf River Raft Race was held in today New London.
The event is in honor of Kari Deimer who died in 2010 at the age of 31 after a short battle with cancer.
Participants raced in kayaks and canoes all in the hopes of winning an award.
"Most of the rafts are home built, so everybody starts building them at the beginning of summer and then they came out here to race them," said Danielle Deimer, Kari Deimer's niece.
All proceeds from the event will go to cancer research and local cancer support programs.
Organizers say they have raised around $13,000 each year since the event was created.
