$1 million donation to fund YMCA water safety program
A $1 million donation could help keep kids safe around water.
YMCA of the Fox Cities announced that the donation came from the Robert W. Brown Family Endowment. Brown, who died last summer, was a co-founder of Great Northern Corporation and a champion swimmer.
YMCA leaders say the money will be used to provide free water safety lessons to children in Neenah and Menasha.
"We are proud to have received this amazing gift and honored to carry Bob's legacy forward through the Safety Around Water initiative," YMCA of the Fox Cities President/CEO William R. Breider III said in a news release. "Bob was a tremendous Y advocate, serving as the chairman of the board of directors and for several key campaigns over the years. Bob had a real passion for water and swimming and we will honor that passion by providing opportunities for children to be safe around water for generations to come."
All third-grade students in the Neenah and Menasha school districts will be invited to participate in the free, four-week Safety Around Water program. The YMCA says students will learn how to safely get out of dangerous situations in the water, such as how to reach the surface if they go under, how to reach the edge of a pool and how to get out of any body of water.
