Fire damages Appleton duplex, displaces 2
APPLETON (WLUK) -- A fire at a two-story duplex forced two people from their homes Monday night.
Appleton firefighters say they were called to the 1500 block of W. Washington Street just after 7:30 p.m. When crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from the eaves on the second floor and a glow coming from a first-floor window. Firefighters went in and found the fire in a bedroom on the first floor. Firefighters say the fire was difficult to put out because of the building's balloon-frame construction.
The building sustained extensive damage.
Crews also did an extensive search and rescue operation to find a person who was originally reported to be home, but it turned out that person was not home at the time of the fire.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
