1 man dead after officer-involved shooting in Marinette Co.
PESHTIGO (WLUK) -- A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Marinette County.
Deputies say they received a call just after 12:00 a.m. Thursday for a report of a man who showed a handgun through the door of an unnamed Marinette motel room.
"And, then there was some sort of action taken to close the door and get that person away from them," said Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve.
The motel called police.
"I don't know if this was a robbery attempt. I don't know if this was some sort of domestic incident or what it was just yet," Sauve said.
The on-going investigation leaves a lot of unanswered questions.
"It took some time but then there was some cellphone usage and through that, there's investigative techniques that are used," Sauve said.
Around 3 a.m. Thursday morning, with the help of cellphone tracking, deputies and officers ended up in Peshtigo.
"They saw a male suspect exit the house, enter a vehicle. The vehicle left westbound on 64. The residence in question is about a mile from Schacht Road," Sauve said.
Officers followed the man and tried to stop him.
"Looks like he just lost control the vehicle was partially in the ditch."
The sheriff says the man got out of his car and he had a gun but what happened next is still unclear.
"I do not know if he fired or did not comply with commands from our officers," Sauve said.
Two deputies and two city police officers were involved in the shooting. They weren't hurt.
"I don't know if two, three or all four of them fired yet," Sauve said.
He adds, it could take time to identify the man.
"He was armed and the officers made a decision that their lives are in danger," Sauve said.
Names of the officers and deputies aren't being released at this time.
Sauve says the Department of Justice is investigating.
The officers and deputies, involved in the shooting, are on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure after an incident like this.
