STURGEON BAY - An Illinois man will spend the rest of his life in a Wisconsin prison, for killing his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child in Door County.

37-year-old Brian Cooper received two life sentences Thursday. He will not be eligible for parole.

Cooper accompanied his girlfriend, 21-year-old Alisha Bromfield to his sister's wedding at a Door Country resort in 2012. After she rebuffed his romantic advances, he strangled her. Cooper also sexually assaulted her afterwards.

He was convicted during a second trial in May, after the first trial ended with a hung jury.

Cooper successfully argued in the first trial he was too drunk, so he couldn't have intended to kill Bromfield.

That has since led to a state law that eliminates the intoxication defense.
