WINNEBAGO COUNTY - Around two dozen chicks died when someone damaged a colony of common terns on an island in Lake Butte des Morts, the DNR says.

A DNR worker discovered the damage Tuesday night. Some of the chicks had been crushed by foot or with a rock.

The chicks were between two and 21 days old.

The common tern is on the state's endangered species list.
