'Cold water challenge' cited in lake rescue

MENASHA - Rescue workers say the "cold water challenge" left a teen unable to get out of Lake Winnebago over the weekend.

Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue officials say they were called to Jefferson Park around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. A 16-year-old girl was stranded in the lake. Rescuers lowered a ladder into the water, and she was able to climb out safely.

The girl is the latest person to need help after attempting the "cold water challenge." Last week, a the Fond du Lac Fire Dept. said a 16-year-old girl was badly cut by zebra mussel shells. Officials say the girl's injuries are so bad she will need surgery.

The "cold water challenge" has been spreading on social media. Typically, after jumping into cold water, one person nominates others to perform the challenge. Area emergency workers have warned against taking the challenge.
