Snow from Blizzard Evelyn causes multiple roof collapses
ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WLUK) -- The heavy snow on the roof at the Econo Lodge Inn and Suites off Ramada Way became too much Sunday.
The section over the indoor pool came crashing down, leaving rubble and debris.
"I got up to see what was going on and the ceiling of the whole pool area just fell in," explained Chris Stephens, a guest at the hotel.
Stephens says the collapse happened within minutes.
"They were getting evacuated right as the the cracking happened," he said. "They were all getting out of the pool, and then a couple minutes later, ten minutes after that, the thing just fell through."
No one was injured in the incident.
But authorities have been busy responding to roofs caving in, in the last 48-hours.
Saturday, a carport collapsed at an apartment complex off Holmgren Way, damaging several cars.
Ashwaubenon Public Safety Chief Eric Dunning says the changing conditions have put extra stress on structures.
"Obviously the high amount of snow, with the rain that we had before it, it's adding a load onto the roof lines," Dunning said. "Especially with the frozen water up there, it's causing these catastrophic failures."
At the Machine Service Manufacturing Plant heavy snow took down the roof and front wall of the building.
Dunning says similar to the precautions that were taken at Econo Lodge Inn, if you see or hear anything unsual you should take action.
"When we arrive what we look for is life safety. The hotel was very fortunate, that the management there had the pool evacuated when they saw the crack," he said.
