APPLETON - A medical condition is forcing Appleton's police chief to step down.

City officials say Pete Helein told them this week of his plans to retire.

In a letter to Mayor Tim Hanna, Helein wrote, “My decision was prompted by a medical condition that has recently been confirmed. After consultation with my family, I have decided that it would be best if I retire.”

Helein's last day on the job is Sept. 5. The city's Police and Fire Commission will then appoint an interim chief and will begin the search for a new chief in the coming weeks, Appleton officials say.

Helein has been police chief since 2012 and has worked for the department for 31 years.
