APPLETON (WLUK) -- A 44-year-old Appleton man is suspected of his seventh drunken-driving offense after a crash Monday night on the city's east side.

Police say they were called to the 1900 block of E. Newberry Street around 9:30 p.m. Officers discovered a van had crashed into a tree and the driver was trapped inside. Firefighters had to cut the van open to get the driver out. There were no passengers.

The driver was taken to the hospital for significant injuries, but he is expected to survive.

Officers determined the man had been speeding down the street, headed west, when he lost control around a curve and crossed the center line before going off the other side of the road.

Emergency crews say they smelled alcohol on the man's breath, and he admitted drinking before the crash.

Police are recommending charges of seventh offense operating while intoxicated. The man was also ticketed for having open intoxicants in his vehicle, driving left of center, driving without insurance and driving without a seat belt.

Court records show the man was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for his most recent drunken-driving conviction in 2009.
