Appleton celebrates African American history

APPLETON - An important day in African American history was celebrated in Appleton on Sunday.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

A small exhibit showcasing the history of African-Americans in the Fox Cities was on display.

Those with the festival say it's a long running tradition.

"The first Juneteenth occurred in Galveston Texas in 1865, now its celebrated throughout the United States," said co-organizer Sabrina Robins.

The exhibit will become part of a traveling display at churches and libraries across the state for the next two years.
