Burke to say Wisconsin needs 'new direction'

WISCONSIN DELLS (AP) - Gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke plans to tell Democrats at the state party convention that Wisconsin needs a "new direction" away from the policies of Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Burke's campaign released excerpts of the speech she planned to deliver Friday night to about 1,000 party faithful at a resort in Wisconsin Dells.

In those excerpts Burke says that Walker "puts those at the top and the special interests ahead of families. That approach isn't working."

She plans to tell Democrats that as she's traveled Wisconsin, she's met families struggling to survive financially. Burke says in the excerpts she will provide a business-like approach to job creation and strengthening the middle class.

Burke will promise to work with Democrats, Republicans and independents to find common ground.
