STURGEON BAY, Wis. (WLUK) -- A Door County deputy was shot Monday morning in Sturgeon Bay while responding to a domestic incident, officials say.

The injured deputy is already out of the hospital after receiving treatment.

Officers responded to a home just after 6 a.m. for a man threatening his father with a knife. After talking to the man inside, authorities were able to get the man to drop the knife. As officers were putting the man in handcuffs, one of the officers' guns unintentionally went off and shot a deputy in the back of the thigh.

Officers say these situations are unpredictable.

"Our officers deal with domestic incidents and disturbances all the time, several times a week, and you never know when these go sour. This one did and it's one of the most dangerous situations they can be called to," said Capt. Dan Brinkman of the Sturgeon Bay Police Dept.

The Sturgeon Bay Police Department is working with the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
