SUAMICO - For the zoo keepers at the NEW Zoo in Suamico, the lion exhibit is normally the first stop of the day.

When designing a lion exhibit, accredited zoos have to follow standards to make sure the exhibit is safe for the lions and the public. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has specifications for the gauge of the fence and the height of the fence.

Lions can jump and dig. The fence at the NEW Zoo is about 15 feet high, and also goes 3 feet below ground to keep the lions from digging under it.

When zoo keepers clean the exhibit, they also check the entire exhibit for potential safety issues.
