A mortgage company employee checking the house in Cascade Jan. 21 found the dead 8-year-old Beagle-mix named Lucky frozen on a pet bed inside Kimberly Fidlin's former house. The utilities had been turned off and a pipe had burst causing extensive water damage.
Veterinarians who examined the dog said it had been neglected for many months, was severely emaciated and likely froze within a day or so of dying, the Sheboygan Press Media reported.
Fidlin, 39, said she last visited the home a month ago and found the dog had died. She said she had been feeding Lucky while living with her boyfriend and had last been there several days before she found his body.
She also said the dog was apparently sick because he would eat but didn't gain weight. The complaint said Fidlin told investigators she could not afford veterinary care and let his condition deteriorate until he died.
Fidlin was charged last week with felony animal abandonment causing death and five misdemeanors. A conviction carries up to 18 months in prison on the felony charge, and up to 90 days jail on each misdemeanor count.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 12 in Sheboygan County Circuit Court. Court records do not list an attorney for Fidlin.
