UW-Green Bay has submitted a bid to host an opening-round game in the men's basketball National Invitational Tournament.As a regular season conference champion, UWGB is guaranteed a spot in the second-tier post-season tournament if it does not get an at-large bid to the NCAA championship.Such an at-large bid is considered a long-shot by most bracket prognosticators.UWGB submitted a bid to host a first-round game Tuesday at the Resch Center, according to an athletic department spokesman.Although first-round games can be played Tuesday or Wednesday, the Resch Center is unavailable on Wednesday due to preparations for the WIAA state girls basketball tournament, which begins Thursday.The NIT field will be announced Sunday night, after the NCAA field is released. In all, 32 teams make the NIT field.The first three rounds of the NIT are hosted at the campus site of one of the participating teams. The semifinals and championship are April 1 & 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.UWGB has played in the NIT just once, losing to Manhattan, 67-65, in 1992.
