The Ludington Daily News reports that the more than $1 million upgrade was part of a two-year process for the last coal-burning, steam-fired vessel in the U.S. Owner Lake Michigan Carferry is working toward stopping the ferry's coal ash discharge into Lake Michigan.
The 410-foot Badger operates between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. It will run this season under a consent decree with the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Justice that requires the Badger to reduce icoal ash discharge this season and end it before the 2015 season.
This year's season ends Oct. 26.
