Post-Crescent Media reports the six-wheeled Caiman Multi-Theater Vehicle will be used as a rescue vehicle for residents, hostages and injured officers.
The departments applied as part of a program that allows the Department of Defense to transfer surplus military property to state and local law enforcement agencies.
Appleton police Sgt. Dave Lund says the departments currently borrow vehicles from Winnebago and Brown counties during high-risk calls. He says having their own vehicle will reduce response times.
The vehicle normally costs about $650,000. But the departments only have to pay about $5,000 to transport it from the manufacturer from Texas, along with the cost of converting it to a police vehicle.
