HOWARD - The spring fishing season began for the Oneida Nation Friday.A ceremony to begin the season took place at Pamperin Park. Traditional tribal singing could be heard as part of the celebration.Fishing in Duck Creek has been a tradition for the Oneida Nation since members arrived in Wisconsin."Its come to be a tobacco burning and welcoming for the cycle of the fish coming back," tribal elder Jerry Hill said. "It's also to educate the young people in passing on the responsibility of carrying this out."The Department of Natural Resources challenged the tribe's right to fish in Duck Creek in 1993. A judge upheld the tribe's right to fish three years later.
