NEENAH - Neenah police searching house to house for a robbery suspect Friday morning found something else, a meth lab.

The incident began just before 7 a.m. when a man robbed the Express Convenience Center gas station on S. Commercial St.

As officers with guns drawn searched around a home on Henry St. for a robbery suspect, across the street workers on break from Val-Fab watched the surreal scene unfold.

"It's kind of scary, I've never seen anything like this,” said Bob Carr of Neenah.

It started with a robbery at the Express gas station on S. Commercial St. where police say a suspect with a nylon stocking on his head and socks on his hands demanded money and acted like he had a weapon, but never showed one. The suspect fled with cash but left a trail for police to follow.

That trail led officers near a house on Winneconne Avenue where police found a meth lab in the garage.

"We actually have multiple scenes, we have where the evidence was dropped out here, we have the scene here where the robbery occurred and now we have this meth lab basically in a garage,” said Neenah Police Chief Kevin Wilkinson.

Wilkinson says officers found footprints in the snow leading from the gas station and called in a K-9 unit from the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office to help track the suspect. Police are now trying to figure out if the robbery and meth lab are connected.

"That remains to be seen, it's possible, certainly the evidence that we found that was dropped or discarded by the suspect was en route to where the meth lab was,” said Wilkinson.

Meanwhile, neighbors spent the morning wondering what all the police activity was about.

"I don't expect that in this area at all, there hasn't been anything like that around here in years,” said Gary Shukowski of Neenah.

Police interviewed people at the home where the meth lab was found, but no one was arrested.

Police say the suspect in the robbery was arrested after police were called to the Appleton Public Library for a theft complaint. His name is not being released.
