KIMBERLY (WLUK) -- The site of a former paper mill in the Fox Valley will be getting a makeover. And Wednesday night during an open house, the public got its first chance to see the design for The Cedars at Kimberly. Those who were born and raised in Kimberly and worked at the old NewPage mill had their chance to weigh in on the Cedars at Kimberly development plans.“I was born right down the street here on Elm Street, and right now part of the property. My original house was torn down,” said Rick Weyenberg.“It's just interesting to see what's going to happen to the place where we went every day for most of our lives,” said Gary Breier. The plans have changed slightly since their debut in November.“We've taken the next step to include an implementation document which is a guide for the plan commission and other planning materials. We also have renderings of the neighborhoods that are about to be created on this site,” said Randy Stadtmueller of Stadtmueller and Associates, the consulting firm working on the project. The Cedars at Kimberly will feature a mix of living spaces as well as retail and restaurant space. Developers also plan to spruce up the riverfront with walkways. That’s something some residents are excited for.“I like the idea of the boardwalk and the waterfront being developed,” said Weyenberg.“It's going to be beautiful. Can't do nothing but good for the town after the mill closed, you know,” said Breier.Others in town still have some reservations on the project. That includes the proposed size of the development.“I don't know if real great big huge homes will be feasible for this type of community that we have here if you look around Kimberly right now,” said Weyenberg. The plan commission still has to approve the final details of the development. Road and sewer system construction could begin as early as this fall.
