MADISON (AP) - An internal investigation has cleared two Madison police officers in last month's fatal shooting of a knife-wielding suspect.

The Madison Police Department said Tuesday that Sgt. David McClurg and Officer Carlin Becker have been exonerated under the department's policy on using deadly force.

Police shot and killed Londrell Johnson on May 2. Authorities say Johnson broke into his neighbors' apartment and killed a mother and daughter. When officers entered the apartment, Johnson reportedly moved toward them with the knife in his hand. Police opened fire, killing Johnson.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne on Monday cleared the officers of any criminal wrongdoing.

Madison police say the two officers remain on leave but will be allowed to return to their regular duties.
